Fire Safety Planning and Training

Introduction

International Fire Consultants Ltd. (IFC) offer a complete spectrum of professional services. These range from advice on planning new schools and colleges to conducting Fire Risk Assessments mandated by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (FSO).
The FSO requires you to prepare for emergencies and to provide training to those who will fulfil a role in the management of fire safety in your facilities.

The preparation of a Fire Safety Plan requires a good understanding of the physical facilities, fire risks and fire safety provisions as well as the persons with a potential role in ongoing fire safety and/or emergencies. Our recent work on Haringey 6th Form Centre represents a comprehensive attempt to meet the intent of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

A complete Fire Safety Plan should include floor plans relevant to occupants in a fire emergency. These can then be used as a basis for development of more definitive Posted Instructions for informing and directing occupants in a fire emergency.

Training Sessions

Once a bespoke Fire Safety Plan (FSP) is prepared, IFC provides several types of training sessions to different audiences within a school or college. These generally fall into the categories shown in the table.

Type of Session
Audience
Purpose
Overview
Principal, Vice Principal and Senior Fire Marshall
Orientation for new plan or for major plan revisions. In practice new Fire Safety Plans take longer to complete and more training is required.
Technical
Fire Team Members
Overview plan details including maintenance and specific emergency duties
Fire Wardens
Senior Faculty and Fire Wardens
Immediate responsibilities in their area
Fire Drills

On request we will help organise, schedule and monitor fire drills to assess their effectiveness. We will also attend debriefing sessions in order to provide both observations and suggestions to make fire drills (and thereby evacuations) more efficient.

Ongoing Risk Assessment

There is an ongoing responsibility for the monitoring of risk in order to assess if fire prevention, fire provisions or Fire Safety Plans need modifications. IFC can assist in the evaluation of risk arising from new additions and modifications to physical facilities and the introduction of new operations. This will often result in modifications to the fire safety plan.

Auditing

On request IFC will conduct an independent audit of the Fire Risk Assessment process. This provides a review independent of the ongoing checks and balances built into the Fire Risk Assessment process.
