Scottish Parliament Building Wins the Big One

The most prestigious award in architecture, The Stirling Prize, awarded by the RIBA in association with The Architect’s Journal, went this year to the Scottish Parliament Building. This unique building rendered a multitude of unusual joinery details, a significant proportion of which had to provide the fire separation that such a large complex building would require. There are a number of doors and screens that could not be tested, purely because of their size and others where their fire performance could only be established by reference to first principles. International Fire Consultants Ltd (IFC) are proud to have been able to have worked with two of the main joinery companies involved in the Scottish Parliament fit-out by assisting in the design of bespoke joinery products that would meet the stringent fire requirements. One of the joinery companies, Mivan Ltd had already won an award for their contribution to this building in a previous competition.

Any visitor to the Scottish Parliament building cannot fail to be impressed by the uniqueness and the quality of the joinery work within. There are few architectural and construction teams that could deliver a building like the Scottish Parliament and probably even fewer fire consultancy practices that could help to make it happen. IFC is proud to be such a practice, making dreams come true and yet protecting the occupants to the extent that the Regulators require. IFC are specialists in solving difficult problems in the field of fire performance. Why do you think we are working on Wembley Stadium and Heathrow?

Congratulations to all those who, like us, played their role in delivering such an award winning building. Makes you proud to be a member of the team, and even prouder to be IFC, a member of many prize winning teams!
