IFC’s Technical Director’s Report Published by ISO

ISO/TR 22898 has been published by the International Standards Organisation after 4 years in preparation by Peter Jackman’s ISO/TC92/SC2 Working Group (WG7). The Technical Report (TR) reviews the changes that should be implemented in the current fire resistance standards Nationally, European wide and Internationally to make the outputs of the tests more relevant to Fire Engineering. The Working Group that is convened by Peter Jackman has worldwide membership (albeit many of the European member states have not attended so much since the inception of CEN), and whilst the primary drafting has been undertaken by Peter, countries such as USA, Canada, China, Japan, etc, recognise that the standard fire resistance test has limited applicability in the context of the functional approach to generating a fire safe structure, and have supported the publication.

The report analyses the limitations of the outputs for the fire resistance test and makes recommendations as to how the validity of the outputs can be improved. The proposed changes in the test procedure and criteria range from minor to fundamental.

The report is of primary interest to regulators/code officials, fire engineers responsible for applying the outputs and most of all to anybody contemplating the construction and installation of a testing facility, especially if their national regulations accept fire engineered solutions. Regrettably ISO copyright prevents IFC from providing you with a copy, but if you want to learn more about its contents before spending the money on the standard, please call IFC and speak to Peter.
